Douglas Students Learn to Eat Fresh, Local and Healthy

The Douglas County School Nutrition Department is receiving ravishing reviews for their pioneering work educating students about food and agriculture. The Golden Radish Award will salute the department’s extraordinary farm to school programs at the 2017 Golden Radish Awards in Atlanta October 30.

In addition to Douglas County, The Georgia Departments of Agriculture, Public Health, Education and UGA Extension and Georgia Organics will honor 74 additional Georgia school districts.  The Golden Radish publicly recognizes these districts for all aspects of farm to school, from the use of locally produced foods to hosting taste tests and gardening with students. Georgia is a recognized leader in school nutrition, with more than 40 percent of Georgia public school districts participating in farm to school programs.

In Douglas County, these programs teach students about food and agriculture through hands on food and garden education, supporting the local economy through local food and fighting childhood obesity. The Golden Radish Committee praised Douglas County School Nutrition for their work using criteria that rated the comprehensiveness of their farm to school programs.

Executive Director of School Nutrition Danielle Scott -Freeman explains that the Bronze award is a district wide effort: “This award is a community effort.  Parents, students, teachers and the community have fully embraced our work to bring farm to school in Douglas County.”

For Douglas County students, food that is fresh, local and healthy means taste tests, edible school gardens and classwork that integrates farm to school into the curriculum. Scott-Freeman adds that thanks to these efforts, “Our students now see the tremendous benefit of enjoying food that is fresh, local and healthy.”

The Georgia Departments of Agriculture, Public Health, Education, UGA Extension and Georgia Organics will award the 2017 Golden Radish Awards Tuesday, October 30, 2017 in Atlanta at the Georgia Freight Depot.
