For the first time, all elementary schools in Douglas County offered Kindergarten Camp to incoming kindergarten students. Approximately 650 kindergarten students across the county registered for the camp which took place July 24-27. In addition to enjoying literacy and math activities in the classrooms, students became familiar with their school buildings and learned procedures in the cafeteria.

Students participated in a one-day field trip to another school for special music activities with Nancy Whittenburger and science activities with Michael Green, the Science Guy. The field trip allowed students to experience a trip on a school bus for the first time. Schools held a kindergarten parent meeting on July 24 to familiarize parents with expectations for the upcoming school year.

Holly Springs Elementary had the highest number of kindergarten students, 47, registered for Kindergarten Camp. Principal Melanie Manley had only positive things to say about the experience. “The children rotated to three different classrooms, so they got to know all of our kindergarten teachers,” said Ms. Manley. “It’s advantageous for our teachers as well as our students to be familiar with each other prior to the first day of school.”

“We had a great turnout for our parent meeting on Monday,” said Assistant Principal Chelsie Goodman. “Parents were happy to learn what to expect for their children, and they enjoyed meeting other kindergarten parents. We are looking forward to a great year with our youngest students.”

Students report for school on August 7. A Back to School Bash will be held at each high school on August 2; times vary by school. Elementary school Sneak-a-Peek will take place on August 3, 4:30-6:00. Sneak-a-Peek for middle School will take place August 3, 5:30-7:00.
